California Safe Surrender Law: A Safe Option for Parents in Crisis
In times of crisis, parents who feel they cannot care for their newborn have a safe, legal, and anonymous option: California’s Safe Surrender Law. This law allows a parent or legal guardian to surrender an infant, up to 72 hours old, at designated Safe Surrender sites without fear of arrest or prosecution, as long as the baby has not been abused or neglected.
The American Canyon Fire Protection District is committed to the safety and well-being of our community. Both of our fire stations are designated Safe Surrender sites:
These stations are staffed 24/7, ensuring that a qualified professional will be available to accept a surrendered infant at any time.
The Safe Surrender process is simple, safe, and confidential:
The Safe Surrender Law was enacted to prevent unsafe abandonments and provide a responsible option for parents in distress. By offering a secure and anonymous way to surrender a newborn, the law helps ensure the child’s safety while protecting the parent from legal repercussions.
If you or someone you know is in need of Safe Surrender services, please know that our fire stations are here to help—without judgment and with full confidentiality.
